Originally built as an “Old English” dwelling in 1911, this house was expanded and redesigned in 1929 by Lewis Bowman, a well-known architect specializing in Tudor-style homes in this area at that time. Unfortunately, the portion of the house that contained the kitchen, mudroom, and servant’s quarters had been poorly renovated in the 1970’s, and the current owners expressed the need for an updated design that would fit seamlessly within their otherwise beautiful home. They also requested that the kitchen include an outdoor eating area from which they could also access their spacious backyard that sat one story below.
Inspired by Bowman’s exquisite wood paneling in the adjacent dining room, reclaimed antique red oak was incorporated into the new kitchen design as a continuous wainscot, a pattern of new exposed beams, and a variety of custom built-in cabinetry. A new stone terrace was created with a gracious stone stairway leading down to the yard. The new steel doors leading out from the kitchen were designed to mimic existing doors in the original family room, and the stonework design was inspired by the beautifully-crafted Tudor detailing found around the home.
