Nestled on a beautiful street that is now an Historic District in Dobbs Ferry, this elegant Victorian home - Second Empire Style - had been neglected for many years. When it was first purchased, the owner wished to restore the building with the intension of reselling the property when completed. Our job was to bring back all the original details of the style, with the needs of a modern family in mind.
The restoration was painstaking and slow, with the entire interior gutted and restructured to recapture the former grandeur of the original Victorian, including the leveling of all floors, rebuilding the main stair and railing, and relocating fireplaces to allow for a more modern, open plan. The existing kitchen was lengthened an additional 10 feet to create more ample space, befitting a house of this scale, and the full-length outdoor porch was equally extended to complete the side elevation. The existing 1950’s masonry garage, located off of the service alley behind the house, was torn down and rebuilt to fit within the style of the house, with a generous mudroom connecting the two structures.
The house was sold mid-construction, so that the new owners could still modify the design and have input on finishes and appliances. For instance, a redesign of the new garage allowed for a custom-designed guest quarters on the second floor, nestled within the Mansard roof.
