The owners of this existing brick Georgian Colonial came to us in need of a complete modernization of the tight, interior spaces of their home. In order for it to function for themselves and their four children, it was clear that the original layout needed to be altered and updated. In addition, they requested that the exterior of the house have a friendlier presentation to the street.
By eliminating the service stair and reconfiguring a new, light-filled central entry stair, topped with a custom skylight, the downstairs plan now has a natural and spacious flow throughout all the public spaces. Upon entering the front door, the formal spaces flank the entry on either side, while the expanded family room is visible and accessible past the stair, through a pair of French doors straight ahead. The new addition creates a less formal cross-axis within the house that, upon entering the new side entrance, leads through the mudroom and into the kitchen, which opens onto the family room and newly expanded outdoor eating terrace beyond.
With the upstairs gutted to create six new bedrooms, and a bit of digging to ensure 8-foot high ceilings in the renovated basement, this renovated home is perfect for an active, modern family. Finally, painted wood trim details at the windows and eaves, along with the addition of shutters, highlight the existing brickwork and spruce up the façade.
