Located on a wooded hill overlooking the Rockefeller Estate and the Hudson River beyond, this site afforded the clients a breathtaking, undisturbed vista that is rare in lower Westchester. While the clients desired that their home have the look and feel of a modest and picturesque English country cottage, they also requested an ambitious program with floor-to-ceiling windows to allow for expansive views from every major room within the house.
To accommodate these two conflicting requirements, the house is organized along a gallery spine, running parallel to the river, with less important spaces to the east, or front of the house, and more important spaces to the west, facing the view. The front facade establishes the image of a 1-1/2 story cottage, while allowing the west elevation to take advantage of the scenic vista with extensive glazing, grand terraces, and a full-width deck for greater enjoyment of the spectacular property. The deep, slate hip roofs conceal much of the massing of the house, permitting dormers and decks to protrude when needed.
