The clients for this project desired a new home that would sit prominently on their
corner property and would have a formal, classic look. The aim for the program was to modify some of the strictly traditional planning concepts in order to accomplish a more open flow of spaces and to enhance one’s awareness of the outside.
The resulting design transforms the center hall colonial model to allow for sweeping views throughout the home. A formal gallery, running lengthwise inside the house, creates a circulation spine by which all major rooms are connected and grants continuous rear garden views. Generously framed openings in the gallery walls and between adjacent spaces allow for outdoor light to permeate. The conventional hall stair, typically located within the entry, is shifted back to the rear wall, sitting within a two-story, light-filled window bay in full view as you enter through the front door. This, along with the ten-foot-high ceilings, succeeds in providing a spacious, airy, and dignified feel to the house.
